Evidence for a Significant Intermediate-age Population in the M31 Halo from Main Sequence Photometry1

چکیده
We present a color-magnitude diagram (CMD) for a minor-axis field in the halo of the Andromeda galaxy (M31), 51 arcmin (11 kpc) from the nucleus. These observations, taken with the Advanced Camera for Surveys (ACS) on the Hubble Space Telescope, are the deepest optical images yet obtained, attaining 50% completeness at mV = 30.7 mag. The CMD, constructed from ∼ 3× 105 stars, reaches more than 1.5 mag fainter than the old main-sequence turnoff. Our analysis is based on direct comparisons to ACS observations of four globular clusters through the same filters, as well as χ2 fitting to a finely-spaced grid of calibrated stellar-population models. We find that the M31 halo contains a major (∼ 30% by mass) intermediate-age (6–8 Gyr) metal-rich ([Fe/H]>−0.5) population, as well as a significant globular-cluster age (11–13.5 Gyr) metal-poor population. These findings support the idea that galaxy mergers played an important role in the formation of the M31 halo. Age Constraints for an M31 Globular Cluster from Main Sequence Photometry1
We present a color-magnitude diagram (CMD) of the globular cluster SKHB-312 in the Andromeda galaxy (M31), obtained with the Advanced Camera for Surveys on the Hubble Space Telescope. The cluster was included in deep observations taken to measure the star formation history of the M31 halo. Overcoming a very crowded field, our photometry of SKHB-312 reaches mV ≈ 30.5 mag, more than 1 mag below t...
متن کاملNear-Field Cosmology with Local Group Dwarf Spheroidals
The Local Group offers an excellent laboratory for near-field cosmology by permitting us to use the resolved stellar content of its constituent galaxies as probes of galaxy formation and evolution, which in turn is an important means for testing cosmological models of hierarchical structure formation. In this review, we discuss the the least massive, yet most numerous type of galaxy in the Loca...
متن کاملStructure and Population of the Andromeda Stellar Halo from a Subaru/suprime-cam Survey
We present a photometric survey of the stellar halo of the nearest giant spiral galaxy, Andromeda (M31), using Suprime-Cam on the Subaru Telescope. A detailed analysis of V I color-magnitude diagrams of the resolved stellar population is used to measure properties such as line-of-sight distance, surface brightness, metallicity, and age, and these are used to isolate and characterize different c...
متن کاملThe Ages and Chemistry of the Oldest Stellar Halo Populations
NGST is capable of reaching the main sequence turnoff of the oldest stellar populations (MV = +4.5) out to a distance ≈ 2 Mpc. There is now evidence that the oldest, most metal poor star clusters are coeval to within 1 Gyr over a 200 kpc radius centered on the Milky Way. NGST can be used to make an equally definitive test of this in the halo and globular cluster system of M31, NGC 147, 185, and...
متن کاملDeep HST V - and I-Band Observations of the Halo of M31: Evidence for Multiple Stellar Populations
We present deep (V ≃ 27) V and I -band stellar photometry obtained using the Hubble Space Telescope’s WFPC2 in two fields in the M31 halo. These fields are located 32 and 50 from the center of M31 approximately along the SE minor axis at the locations of the M31 globular star clusters G302 and G312 respectively. The M31 halo luminosity functions are not consistent with a single high-metallicity...
